This dark-eyed junco appears to be enjoying the catkins (cylinder flowers) of my Corylus avellana 'Contorta.' It may be one of their last times together for the season, as last year, the juncoes disappeared on April 15th (which is tomorrow), perhaps avoiding filing taxes. I'm sure this fine shrub will miss this little songster and will look forward to the late fall, which has been the standard return time for juncoes.

A view of a dark-eyed junco puffing up to keep warm in my winter garden, however, he/she is a snowbird and leaves here when winter ends, and travels to colder parts of the world!

Yesterday's snowstorm has been called "Winter's Last Hurrah." I witnessed sleet-like rain turning into a heavy wet snowfall in my garden. Snow piled quickly atop all my bird feeding stations and upon the branches of my shrubs as well as my trees. I almost missed seeing a lone dark-eyed junco, because his/her white belly plumage blended in with the snow. View 1 of 3.
