The Five Pennies (1959): Loring "Red" Nichols is a cornet-playing country boy who goes to New York in the 1920s full of musical ambition and principles. He gets a job playing in Wil Paradise's band, but quits to pursue his dream of playing Dixieland jazz.

The plot concerns con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer & leader, and sells band instruments & uniforms to the naive Iowa townsfolk, promising to train the members of the new band. But Harold is no musician and plans to skip town without giving any music lessons.
Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a respected but perfectionist actor. Nobody in New York wants to hire him anymore because he is so difficult to work with. After four months without a job, Michael hears of an opening on the soap opera Southwest General from his girlfriend Sandy Lester (Teri Garr), who tries out for a role but doesn't get it. In desperation, he dresses as a woman, auditions as "Dorothy Michaels" and wins the part.
The film follows the story of Dolly Levi (a strong-willed matchmaker), as she travels to Yonkers, New York to find a match for the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder. In doing so she convinces his niece, his niece's intended, and Horace's two clerks to travel to New York City.
