When lighting strikes sand

Not a composite! One of the most amazing things that I have seen in my entire life. A powerful explosion of Colima Volcano in western Mexico and a big lightning of above 1/2 mile lenght connecting the ash cloud and volcano surface. The light was so big that a part of the volcano looked bright. The lightning, like a big strobe in the sky even "freeze" the scene and the ash column in this 8 seconds shot. Nature, third prize singles: Colima Volcano in Mexico shows a powerful night explosion with lightning, ballistic projectiles and incandescent rockfalls; image taken in the Comala municipality in Colima, Mexico.
