Found this tip online. Slow boil water and a small amount of baking soda in an old pan (one that you don't mind ever cooking in again) and submerge hinges, handles or pulls into water for about 10 minutes. Use tongs to remove and while they are still hot scrub with soft toothbrush. The paint comes right off. Then I just rinsed them to remove the baking soda and they look great. I can keep all my original hardware now!
