December 20, 1916 - British National Service Department Established. Britain’s new Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, had promised to streamline and increase Britain’s war effort. Among his first acts towards this goal was to establish a National Service Department to manage conscription, which had been introduced in 1916 for the first time in Britain's history.
