Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was the only woman in her medical school class in 1855. Walker volunteered her service to the Union Army, but was not allowed to enlist, so served as a volunteer. She was not allowed to serve as a doctor, either, so she served as a nurse -at first.
Franklin McCain of the Greensboro Four passed away yesterday. We remember him on the blog. A favorite quote: "Don't wait for the masses," he said. "I am saying to you the youth, all you have to do is believe, all you have to do is have a dose of commitment, throw yourself to the wind, forget about caution… become the true believer. If you want to do something, don’t wait for the masses, because they ain't coming."
