The Supreme Macaroni Company by Adriana Trigiani. Quite simply, I am blown away by how good this book is. It's a collection of stories that read like novels in their own right, linked by a hugely potent sense of place, a slightly surreal, almost dreamlike sensibility, and a pulse of sometimes almost violent emotion. It's completely haunting. You'll read nothing else like this this year.
Nightwoods: A Novel. The story of a lone woman trying to raise her niece and nephew after their mother is murdered, set in a small town in the 1960's. This story has a little of everything, crime story, love, education and small town America. Recommend this one too!
