1875- Over the next 10 years, the diet of the average Briton changes dramatically. Forced off farms by upper-class land enclosures, the average person now purchases food rather than growing it. Refined flour from the US, fatty & salty tinned meats, & especially sugar are becoming cheaper all the time. The result is disastrous for health so that half of the men volunteering for the Boer War in 1900 will be rejected as malnourished, not because of the quantity but the quality of food.
