Can you hear me?

The human need for being-understood-and-understanding-others is fascinating. The last few weeks I have been bombarded on various levels with this concept, and it sent me into some contemplation. Time … is not on our side Living in the Western World implies having a busy life. “Busy” seems to be like a password, used whenever we enter a new conversation. When asked “Hi, how are you doing?” nine out of ten times the reply will be “good thanks, just busy”. When we’re busy, we’re tempted to take…

Giants are a bit of a theme in our house lately. We have just completed a giant detox eating plan for two weeks to stop us from becoming giants ourselves (it helped somewhat). Also, Paul wrote a blog series on the giants in the Bible, and that made me think of another kind of giant - the Giant named Despair, one of the fascinating characters in John Bunyan’s book, the Pilgrim's Progress. By the way, if you're a Christ follower and have not read it yet, this Christian classic written in the 1 Giants In The Bible, Romans 8 28, Thriller Video, The Pilgrim's Progress, Valley Of Death, John Bunyan, Poor Children, 1 Peter, Meet The Team

Five songs and a Two-Step

What do Queen, Peter Sarstedt, Paul Simon, Maroon 5 and Abba have in common? Apart from them making up a pretty good Saturday afternoon playlist, they also help tie this post together… let me explain. My blog posts so far all dealt with the adversities we experience. Seems like I am not quite off that track yet. This post is a bit like “all your pain in one video” — watch it if you have not yet, 1,5 minutes and guaranteed to put a smile on your face! This post is a bit like that, and there…

I keep track on some of my oldest friends on Facebook, and on Sundays that's where I go to church these days. My kids posts really cool photos on Instagram every now and again, so I am on there. I went onto Pinterest to follow my wife’s ideas about home decor when we were renovating our house. Twitter I ignore almost entirely. There are only so many hot-under-the-collar moments I can endure before having my day ruined.   The guys from Monty Python after reading their Twitter feeds for too Connie Booth, Really Cool Photos, Warrior King, Christian Friends, Monty Python, Do What Is Right, S Stories, Thought Provoking, I Movie

Uncle Screwtape’s guilt games during lockdown

Who in the world is Uncle Screwtape? If a British person in the 1940s were to look at this title, they probably would have ignored the reference to Uncle Screwtape (they knew who he was) and wondered “what in the world is lockdown?”. Or perhaps not... It was the time of the German air raids and they all had curfews and bomb shelters in their backyards. Just watch The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. However, many of us living in 2020 would probably ignore the word “lockdown” (we are sick…

The Masked Giant

We are reaching the end of all this giant talk. But one giant still lurks in the paragraphs of this post, one last giant we still need to dislodge from his hiding place… In my previous post I wrote about survival in the valleys of our lives. Little did I know then what valleys would still lie ahead. Schools closing again for another month for most grades. The academic school year now going to flow into 2021. For our family that’s not such bad news, as our children have been schooling…
