Surfboards are usually constructed using polyurethane foam. They are made stronger with one or more thin pieces of wood, called stringers, going down the middle of the board. Andy Irons, (passed away Nov - professional surfer. His wife was pregnant with their first child when he died of drug overdose. When we were on Oahu Jan 2011 there were signs for him everywhere on the North Shore. such a shame.
