This Day in History: Oct 11, 1899: Boer War begins in South Africa

The Second Boer War (Dutch: Tweede Boerenoorlog, Afrikaans: Tweede Vryheidsoorlog or Tweede Boereoorlog) was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking Dutch settlers of two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State. The Boer War (1899-1902): The British controlled most of southern African what they didn't control was controlled by the Boers---Dutch descendants of early African colonists---after finding major mineral deposits on Boer land, the British invading resulting in the Boer Wars. The British took the Boer territories and created the White controlled political system that would dominate South Africa for more than 100 years.

In addition to the scorched earth policy, a major British tactic to deal with the Boer guerrilla campaign was the construction of thousands of small blockhouses, such as this one, throughout the former Boer Republics, to protect their supply. Robert Baden-Powell and his staff after the Siege of Mafeking

Siege of Mafeking

Siege of Mafeking, 1899-1900. The second Boer War was the longest and costliest Victorian war. Mafeking became a center of the struggle. The strategically located town was besieged by Boers in the first phase of the war, and its garrision managed to hold out against superior numbers for 217 days until relieved. Commanding mostly local troops and police, Colonel Robert Baden-Powell led a brilliant defense. The eventual relief of the siege was a breaking point for the Boer army.
