A ventricular septal defect is a common heart defect that's present at birth. The defect involves an opening/hole in the heart forming between the heart's lower chambers(ventricular septum; left ventricle into right ventricle), allowing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix. Depending on how big it is it could cause no problems or could require surgery early on.
