Ball turners, and how to use them

I've spent the last several weeks making a ball turning attachment. Well, that time includes making various other tools that I needed to make the ball turner, as you might expect. Like I needed an unobtainable Acme (trapezoidal) thread, so I cut a tap and... then I needed to cut the relief on the tap, but I had no tailstock for my rotary table... and so on... I've noticed several people have made their own. Maybe if I start this thred with a run down of how my ballturner came…

A $24.00 digital caliper turns into a tailstock DRO

I picked up a cheap digital caliper a while back when they were on sale to mount on my lathe tailstock and finally got around to making a mount for it yesterday. For the mount on the main body of the tailstock I milled out a piece of 1”x2” Al. on a 30° slope so that I wouldn’t have to crouch to read it then bolted it onto the ram body. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh67/Dockrat1/IMGP1304Medium.jpg I then cut all the unnecessary bits and pieces off the caliper and cut it to…

Hi Guys, It is winter time for most of us on this board and a lot of us may have a little extra shop time on our hands. During my career as a toolmaker and later a tool and diemaker, I made many, many tools for my own use. Some of them are run of the mill stuff like 123 blocks and parallels and some of them are things many of you have probably never seen. I have photographed many of them and would like to share them with the group if there is an interest.

Home made tools! - WeldingWeb™ - Welding forum for pros and enthusiasts

Hey guys I know everybody out there has over the years made some of their own tools. Some people make their own because they simply cannot buy what they need or sometimes you can make some things better than the originals. Can people who have made their own tools share photos with people on this site so we can marvel at your work and as a bonus maybe make our own too!!!!
