The Hawken rifle, originally created in Flintlock & later in Percussion, was a black powder muzzleloading rifle built by the Hawken brothers, and used by the Fur Trade Mountain Men on the prairies and in the Rocky Mountains of the United States & at Rendezvous during the 1820's to 1850's. It has become synonymous with the "plains rifle", the buffalo gun, and the fur trapper's gun. Developed in the 1820s, it was displaced by breechloaders (such as the Sharps rifle) & lever-action rifles.

Virginia Manufactory 2nd Model Rifle – The Virginia Manufactory of Arms in Richmond, VA, operated between 1802-21. This flintlock was one of 3,177 produced at the armory in 1809. During the Civil War, the armory was rebooted with the purpose of taking many of these guns and converting them to the newer percussion system and pressing them into service; the facility burned in 1865. This particular gun was converted and then reconverted back to flintlock at a later date.
