Nelson Mandela Anti-apartheid activist who became President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first to be elected in a fully democratic process. Mandela served 27 years in prison. Following his release in 1990, Mandela supported reconciliation and negotiation, and led the transition towards multi-racial democracy in South Africa.
