Hitler's barbarity against Jews persuaded many scientists and intellectuals to leave Germany, among them Nobel prizewinning physicist Albert Einstein. Here he disembarks in New York on a visit in 1930; when Hitler came to power in 1933, Einstein was teaching in the U.S., and stayed. In 1939, he sent his famous letter of concern to FDR that ultimately led to the atomic bomb project - a letter that the pacifist Einstein later said he wished he had not written.
"Irma Grese, “the Beast of Belsen” (1923-1945) - a former nursing assistant and teenage Nazi SS auxiliary female guard in Auschwitz and Belsen concentration camps. Under the Nazi system, Irma was trained to function as a state serial killer, but in the end began to kill for her own hedonistic needs. She had a dark compulsion to torture and kill inmates in her charge and became so excessively homicidal that even male SS guards began to complain. She was hung by the British on December 13th 1945."

A surviving Mengele twin, Moshe Offer, later recalled the death of his twin brother: "Dr. Mengele had always been more interested in Tibi. I am not sure why - perhaps because he was the older twin. Mengele made several operations on Tibi. One surgery on his spine left my brother paralyzed. He could not walk anymore. Then they took out his sexual organs. After the fourth operation, I did not see Tibi anymore. I cannot tell you how I felt. It is impossible to put into words how I felt.
A survivor looks out a barred window at the Hadamar Institute. Hadamar was one of six institutes used by the Nazis during the "T4 Operation". T4 was the codename for euthanasia activities performed by German doctors on the mentally and physically disabled, children of mixed marriages, geriatrics, disabled soldiers and other lebensunwertes Leben - life unworthy of life. Patients were gassed or killed by overdose or starvation. Between 1939 and 1945, 200,000 people died under T4 guidelines.
At Auschwitz, Mengele did a number of twin studies. After the experiment was over, these twins were usually murdered and their bodies dissected. He supervised an operation by which two Gypsy children were sewn together to create conjoined twins; the hands of the children became badly infected where the veins had been resected. Mengele was almost fanatical about drawing blood from twins, mostly identical twins. He is reported to have bled some to death this way
Joseph Laroche and Juliette Lafargue were an intershade couple aboard the Titanic. As the ship sank, Joseph stuffed his coat with money & jewelry, took his pregnant wife and children to the deck and managed to get them into a lifeboat. He gave the coat to his wife, and said: “Here, take this, you are going to need it. I’ll get another boat. God be with you. I’ll see you in New York.” Joseph died in the sinking. He was the only victim of African Descent on the Titanic.
On a frozen Moscow morning in January 1950, Siamese twins, Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyopova were born. The delivery was by caesarian section. On awakening from the anesthetic, the mother was told her babies had died shortly after birth. This was a lie by the Soviet medical authorities. Instead, they took the girls away to a medical institute in the Moscow region and used them for experimentation and exhibit.
In life, German knight Christian Friedrich von Kahlbutz, felt he was entitled to any woman (virgin or wife) he wanted. When the wife of a shepherd refused him, he took his revenge on the woman's husband and murdered him. At his trial he swore an oath, "It was not I, otherwise after my death my body will not decay". Oddly, that is exactly what DID happen. Some say that the preserved state of his body is proof of his guilt while others say that it is simply a case of natural mummification.
