Acted as President of the Transvaal when the territory was annexed in 1877, joined Kruger and Pretorius to take up arms against the British. He led the commando that defeated the British at Laing's Nek, Ingogo and Majuba Hill. Joubert became commandant-general of the Transvaal and managed to crush the Jameson Raid in January 1896. He died soon after besieging Ladysmith, which proved to be disasterous, as opposed to what his younger generals had urged him to do.
