the german girl by armando lucas correa book cover with ship in background
Book Review - The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa
THE GERMAN GIRL by Armando Lucas Correa. The book tells two connected stories of loss. One is of "the German girl" Hannah who escapes 1939 Berlin to arrive in Cuba; the other is about Anna, Hannah's great niece, and her loss of her father in the World Trade Center tragedy. Anna, in search of her father's history, arrives in Cuba to discover the family story. I found the book often difficult to follow and jumpy between time periods. An interesting read with new perspectives on WWII emigrants.

In 1986 social worker Margaret Humphreys investigated a woman's claim that, aged four, she had been sent to Australia by the British government. Margaret discovered that 50,000 children had been deported from Britain, until as recently as 1970. Many were told that parents were dead. Parents were told that children had been adopted. For many it was to be a life of horrendous abuse far away from everything they knew. Margaret reunited families & drew world attention to an outrageous injustice.
