Aloe dichotoma (Quiver Tree)

Aloe dichotoma (Quiver Tree) in Namaqualand. Why are they called Quiver Trees? The Khoisan Bushman people of the Kalahari Desert, hollowed out the succulent branches to make "Quivers" to put their arrows in for hunting game. As there are not a lot of trees and resources in the Desert, they had to use what was available. Goegap Nature Reserve, Springbok, Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa, August 2007. Quiver Tree Forest, Keetmanshoop, Namibia

Quiver tree (Aloe dichotoma) is not really a tree, rather a plant of the genus aloe, as evident from its scientific name, and one of the few species of aloe that reaches tree proportions — it can grow 7 to 9 meters high. Quiver Tree Forest is not really a forest despite having some 250 samples growing in a rather small and confined area. The tree which is not a tree and the forest which is not a forest is a magical and true photographic playground. Technical Details: Nikon D800E…

Quiver Trees 8 by Inge Johnsson

The Quiver Tree Forest (Kokerboom Woud in Afrikaans) is a forest and tourist attraction of southern Namibia. It is located about 14 km north-east of Keetmanshoop, on the road to Kos, on the Gariganus farm. It comprises about 250 specimens of Aloe dichotoma, a species of aloe that is also locally known as "quiver tree" (Afrikaans: kokerboom) because bushmen traditionally used its branches to make quivers. The forest is spontaneous; the tallest quiver trees are two to three centuries old. The…
