Battle of Colenso, 15 December, 1899. Attempting to relieve the siege of Ladysmith, Sir Redvers Buller tried to cross the Tugela River at the town of Colenso, Natal. Lacking competent staff officers and good battlefield intelligence, Buller's sizable force was soundly defeated by a much smaller Boer force. Four officers won Victoria Crosses for trying to rescue guns of the royal field artillery that had been cut off by Boer rifle fire.
