Last week Monday pupils formed a human rhino on the school field - and what a beautiful rhino it was! A total of 414 pupils from Sunningdale Prep and the Senior Primary participated. We raised R3198.50 for the Rooting for Rhino Schools Challenge.
Andi Carr represented the Elkanah House athletics squad at the Lochnerhof Primary School inter-schools athletics event. She placed 4th in the U13 hurdles and received a silver medal for the 100m sprints.
Grade 4 pupil Storm Elliott recently finished fourth in her age group at the Western Province Junior Tennis Masters. This was her 11th tournament for 2012. Her final tournament in this age group is on the 24 November and she starts as the top seed. From December she will move to the Under 12 age group and enter the National rankings for the first time.
The Grade 4s handed R9 600 to the Guide Dog Association, enabling them to sponsor 3 puppies. Pupils did various chores at home (setting the table, feeding the dog, washing dishes etc.) to earn the money which they donated back to the Association.
A team of 12 dedicated and enthusiastic Senior Primary pupils jumped at the chance to get involved in a Collect-a-Can competition held in conjunction with Giraffe House to build Gerry, their iconic ambassador. Our task was to build Gerry using 300 or more used beverage cans and we most certainly succeeded in doing that! We decided size did matter and went lifelike so our Gerry is about the size of a young giraffe, just short of two metres.
For their History curriculum Grade 10s study the Vietnam War and the 1960's. They pay attention to reasons why America engaged in the war; why they struggled to overcome the Vietcong and the role the media played in forming people's opinions about events during that time. Besides America's war efforts they also engaged in the culture and fashions of the 60's. To celebrate the 60's culture, they held a 60's Dayupils dressed up in 60's fashion, had a party and watched old 60's TV programmes.
