Under every painting is three failed attempts, and for every successful one there is 100 failures. Art is a science that incorporates the left and right brain. It is not just a quistion of feeling. #artistatrest Today is day 21 of #lockdown, with 14 more days to go. I've been enjoying this opportunity to do things I've never had time for. We are blessed in living in a stunning cottage on a hilltop with great views. I call it my #stoepsittherapy. (Sitting on the porch therapy). I normally come sit here with my coffee, bible and gitar and try spend time with God and hear what His thoughts is for the day. #onmyeasel Absolutely loving the process. I had to tear myself away from the studio at 5pm. (Home and hubby waiting) It's been so long since I've really enjoyed and been excited about my work. This is something new for me. I haven't focused on figures in a long while. My initial focus has always been abstracts. I'm still planning on doing some more abstracts. Why work with encaustic? The process of painting with encaustic's is very different from oil or acrylics. With the later two you make use of mediums to keep it wet or speed up the drying process. You can blend and paint over. Wipe off or pat down. Encaustic is a totally different aproach .Instead of working with mediums, you work with heat and cold. No...the bird is just for fun. Today was hard for my back. Four hours of scraping back the background to its bottom layer. Yesterday I noticed cracks forming in the surface. The original painting was on canvass. I've had the canvass stretched and glued to a wooden surface to prevent any future cracking. Wax does not like to bend. My assumption is that the cracking would be the result of older cracks on the canvass before it was glued flat. It's a new dawn, a new day and a new year! It's a very hot and sweaty 32 degrees Celsius inside the studio. I've decided to work over an old painting that didn't sell. Yes! That's what happens to the old ones. They either get donated to charity to be auctioned of for the charity to get money, or I destroy them by painting over them.
