Food, Wine and Adventure in Stellenbosch

Located just 30 minutes from Cape Town, the Stellenbosch region and the Wine Routes is one of the best kept travel secrets in the world. They’ve been producing fine wines in Stellenbosch longer than they have in Bordeaux and that tradition has led to more than 200 exceptional wineries producing some of the best wines in the world. It’s not only about the wine in Stellenbosch though, a vibrant food and arts culture also prevails.

Xhosa Lunch in Kayamandi Township - When ever I travel I try to connect with the local community whenever possible and luckily for me this was easily done in Stellenbosch thanks to the Bites and Sites food tour company. One of there most popular tours is an afternoon in the local township, to learn more about the community before working with a local cook to produce authentic and homey Xhosa meals. This promises to be a highlight of any visit to the area.

Downtown Stellenbosch - The history of Stellenbosch goes back to the 17th century and while you can find remnants of its Dutch colonial past, its all about the future here. That’s partly thanks to a vibrant university culture, one of the best in the country. But it’s also thanks to longterm residents, people who love their community and support every now shop, cafe and gallery that opens. So when you visit plan on spending plenty of time exploring this beautiful town.

Fleur du Cap Wine & Salt Pairings - I love when wineries do things differently, when they offer something more than just a standard wine tasting and such was my experience at Fleur du Cap. Located in a cave-style cellar burrowed out of the mountains, experts led guests through a unique pairing of salts, foods and wines demonstrating the power that proper pairing can have. This is a perfect activity for foodies and wine aficionados alike.

Dornier Wine Estate Homestead - While relatively new to wine production, the estates and farms that comprise beautiful Dornier Wines dates back to the 17th century. While their premium wines are indeed incredible, they set themselves off through a unique building onsite - The Homestead, designed by Sir Herbert Baker. This historic home was once the heart of the farm and today Dornier allows individuals and groups to stay the night, to experience winery life from the inside.

Warwick Wine Estate Big Five Wine Safari - South Africa is famous for its Big Five Game Safaris, but in Stellensbosch they provide a different kind of safari. At Warwick guests can choose to go on their wine safari. This fun educational Land Rover Safari takes you on a mountain journey through Warwick’s vineyards where they compare the ‘Big 5’ animals with their ‘Big 5’ grape varieties. The wines are amazing, but so are the views.

Breakfast at Schoon de Companje - One of my favorite restaurants in Stellenbosch, this bakery, butchery and restaurant is a relatively new resident of the town, but is already one of the most popular. Members of the Schoon family have some unique culinary talents, including bakers and butchers, and decided to combine their expertise in this wonderful cafe experience. Come early for the fresh bread, you won’t regret it.

Wine and Chocolate Tasting Waterford Wine Estate - From its inception, Waterford was determined to concentrate not just what is in their bottles, but what is outside of them as well. This means that a visit to Waterford is a true experience, with safari truck rides into the vineyards and a unique chocolate pairing. Waterford was the first to create their own chocolates in order to create a master class in wine and chocolate pairing. This is a must-do activity for any visitor to the area.

Cheetah Outreach - Once numbering in the many thousands, the beautiful cheetah is now on the brink of total extinction. One of the reasons for this rapid die-off comes from farmers who shoot the cheetahs in order to protect their flocks and herds. The Cheetah Outreach mission is to 1) showcase a few cheetahs to the public for interactive experiences so they can learn more about them and 2) breed the Anatolian Shepherd Dog to give to farmers as a no-kill option.
