Wanderings: History and charm in Matjiesfontein

Matjiesfontein is one of those places that seemingly shouldn't exist. It is a village with the most Afrikaans name imaginable that looks like it was transplanted directly from Victorian Britain to the middle of the Karoo. I mean really? How is this possible? Yet it is

A Corner of the Bar

A Corner of the Bar This is one end of the fossilised 19th century Laird's Arms bar in the Karoo village of Matjiesfontein. Serious – this is the real, original thing, not some recreation. It is attached to the Lord Milner Hotel. There is a symphonion in the corner too. If you've never heard one of these playing, and have the chance, don't miss it.
