Moving south along the road after taking the bend and climbing a small hill we find the palatial home “Rust-en-Vrede”. It was originally designed by Sir Herbert Baker as a residence for Cecil John Rhodes but he died prior to construction. Sir Abe Bailey bought the site from Rhodes’ deceased estate and built the home as Baker had designed it and in strict accordance with Rhodes’ request that Baker practised architectural restraint.
