Hope you are ready for day 2 of our amazing bird competition! Do any birders out there know what this beautiful species is?

Four-coloured Bushshrike (Telophorus viridis), eastern Africa

These pretty yellow flowers are not part of the tree but a separate plant called a Leopard Orchid, which is the largest of the 500 Orchid species found in South Africa. It is not a parasite, taking its food from the tree, as many people believe but an Ephiphyte. That means it uses the tree for support and access to light but not food, as it has aerial roots and establishes a compost heap at the centre of the plant.

At River Lodge, our guests had the game drive of a lifetime when they got to witness the hunting prowess of this lioness! We watched as she spent nearly 30 minutes trying to stalk and close in on a sub-adult giraffe. Unfortunately she made the wrong move at the last moment and gave herself away. She then went on to stalk some baboons that were busy feeding under a Jackalberry tree, and with a surprising amount of acceleration and speed, managed to grab one of the unsuspecting primates.

This White Backed Vulture caught the attention of our cameras this morning at Shiduli. As we watched it started getting restless and soon spread its mighty wings and took off, no doubt in search of food.

The most perfect morning light fell on this Spotted Hyena, providing our guests at Shiduli with some spectacular photos. When looking at this photo, it seems particularly harsh that this species is one of Africa's Ugly 5!

Romance is in the air as this Black-bellied Bustard showed us his skills at River Lodge yesterday, as he proudly displayed on top of a termite mound in an attempt to attract a mate. The unique call (which sounds similar to a champagne cork popping!) travels far through the bush, enabling females from quite a large area to hear him.

Trying to capture birds in flight is a difficult task for any photographer, however this juvenile Tawny Eagle provided the perfect photo opportunity for us here at Chisomo.

At Chisomo, our guests got to witness just how important family bonds are within an elephant herd, when they got to watch these 2 juvenile males pushing and shoving one another and engaging in some typical 'boy' playtime!

Over the next 2 weeks we'll be posting a picture of a Bird together with that Bird's particular call. You may find the picture posted in the morning, with the call, only posted later during the day! Each day we would like you to identify the Bird by posting the answer in the comments under the picture. The lucky fans who correctly identifies all 10 birds will go into the draw for the Grand Prize, which consists of a 2 night stay for 2, fully inclusive, at one of our stunning Lodges!
