Waterkloof Wine Estate, Somerset West
Sometimes I think that certain places are kept quiet to keep themselves from being discovered, almost like a little secret. I've heard the name Waterkloof Wine Estate but today was the day to explore and go find out for myself. Waterkloof is set in a magnifficent setting high against the slopes of lower hills of the Hottentots Holland mountains en route to Sir Lowry's Pass. They boast with connoisseur wines and fine dining for the most discerning palate. There are quite few suprising…
Greyton on a sunny winter's day
Have you ever been to Greyton? You should go, you know. One word of warning - you'll fall a little in love with it all. Greyton is a little town close to historical Genadedal, near Caledon in the Western Cape, on the edge of the Gobos River, a perenial stream and tributary of the Riviersonderend River and flanked by the majestic Riviersonderend mountains. About one and a half hour from Cape Town, its an easy drive for a day's outing although, like us, you'll probably regret not booking for a…

Pretti Cool and All in Knysna
Knysna effects me in many ways. Parts of it feels like that favourite old t-shirt that I just can't toss because its there for those days when its the only thing I want clinging to my skin. There are smells and sounds that remind me of places that I thought I had forgotten - good places - faint; vague and nostalgically familiar. Apart from the personal favourites - mostly the quieter spots - the other day I ended up in an industrial place of all things and met up with someone I had been…

Babylonstoren
I was thrilled when I was recently invited on a guided tour to Babylonstoren's gardens. Patrice Taravella was responsible for designing this magnificent garden that spans eight acres. Designed according to a formal structure, every one of over 300 plants in the garden is edible and is grown as biologically as possible. I have never seen such a huge variety of fruits and vegetables - it is quite mind boggling. (An avalaible list here). A detailed map is presented to you on your visit, and…
Finding Pretty Again
A sudden trip up the West Coast was quite rewarding. The first burst of flowers were near Darling, a feast for the eye after being held up by too many stop-go interruptions of the roadworks from Malmesbury. I'm not going to say too much - give you a few links of the places I stopped along the way, and let the pictures tell its own story. The next two were taken between Klawer and Piketberg - the field of daisies stretched further than my eyes could see. Judging by the link and the sleeping…
The charm of Bonnievale and Riggton River Farm
Small country towns have a charm of their own and there are many in the Western Cape for one to explore - either on a daytrip or for a weekend. Bonnievale is no exception. The beauty of Bonnievale was rediscovered recently on a weekend camping trip at Riggton River Farm, right on the edge of the Breede River. Not being a regular camper and not knowing what to expect, I was pretty impressed by a neat campsite, well maintained with clean ablutions with hot water (most of the time) which was…
