The Last Line [of defence] - Master in Architecture thesis

Narrating the Myth and Reality of Robben Island This thesis is a search for an architectural language that seeks to simultaneously engage with the past, present and the future layers of a place. I centred this project on the prophecy of climate change and the possible effects of a rising sea level.

Tower Elevation As the towers are situated along the coastline a smaller gravel pathway ascends down from the primary route to the base of the tower. This means that as sea level rises the towers slowly begin to flood making them inaccessible to the passerby. This makes the towers a marker or tombstone to a lost landmark of the Island, remembering a history that is not submerged.

Node 12 - Climate Change Observatory This node aims to inform public perception of the issues and threats of climate change both on an international level and how it will manifest locally. This node is located adjacent to the Medium B Security Prison that is now converted into a Multi-Purpose Learning Centre, on the eastern edge of the Island.
