.On this date 18 January 1902, Kommandant Gideon Jacobus Scheepers was shot by the British for his exploits in the Boer War. Some exploits are the stuff of legend, like the time he rode into a town, released all the Boer prisoners, locked up the British magistrate, and hauled down the Union Jack — to the delight of the Boer locals.

June 28, 1901 - The first contingent of Boer War prisoners arrived aboard the SS Armenian and were transferred to internment camps set up at Darrell’s and Burt Island. Over the next 18 months, Bermuda would receive more than 4,000 Boer War POWs.
