Dinosaurs dominated the earth for about 135 million years – their fossil remains left behind on every continent. One can only imagine the first discoveries of these giant bones or fossilized tracks disappearing into the past. I love photos of dinosaur bones and the people who found them, standing alongside to measure themselves against these long extinct beings and the lives they lived – same space, different time.

Reproduction of the skull of Livyathan melvillei, a cetacean that lived in the Miocene (13/12 million years ago). Based on the size of the skull, the length of the Livyathan was estimated at between 13.5 and 17.5 meters (44-57 feet). The presence of a cavity for the spermaceti bag suggests that it looked like a sperm whale, but the teeth (35.6 cm long x 10.6 cm wide each - 14.5 x 4 inches) are those of a top predator, a sort of giant killer whale.

Xiphactinus (from Latin and Greek for "sword-ray") is an extinct genus of large (4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 feet) long) predatory marine bony fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous. When alive, the fish would have resembled a gargantuan, fanged tarpon (to which it was, however, not related). The species Portheus molossus described by Cope is a junior synonym of X. audax
