The South West African Specialist Unit (SWASPES) grew out of 101 Specialist Unit, formed at Oshivelo in 1977 to centralise reaction force elements. By 1978, it comprised of 2 companies of mounted infantry, 2 platoons each of trackers and motorcyclists, and 60 dogs and was renamed 1 SWA Specialist Unit (1 SWASPES). By 1982 it had transferred to the SWATF with a base at Otavi.
