N1 into Cape Town c1956.
On the extreme right is Ysterplaat Air Force base and a huge block of flats (military) now occupies the space where the houses are.To the left was Windemere, a low cost housing estate now long gone.a Railway line (to the airbase) crossed the road at about from where this photo was taken. Woodstock seaside (circa 1938-ish)
Detail of an old photo of Cape Town. Will try and get a high-def scan of this pic (it's very large (a1+), and the owner might not trust me with it).
When Table Mountain still had a forest 1968.
Particularly the Silverstream area used to look like the Knysna forests with massive trees (not Pine), thick green undergrowth and lots of birds.
Doll House roadhouse Mouille Point
a Sixties view of this well loved beacon in Cape Town that lost its battle against progress in the early eighties.Just about everybody in C.T. loved this place, and many a nostalgic tale can be told. This photo was kindly supplied by fellow Flickr member HiltonT from the U.K. He has a treasure trove of old S.A. images from the 50's and 60's here www.flickr.com/photos/63154252@N00/collections/7215762191... Well worth a visit!
