World's first heart transplant 4/12/67 Mr.Louis Washkansky was the world's first heart transplant recipient at Groote Schuur hospital on Monday 4th December 1967. This fantastic operation was performed by Professor Chris Barnard and his team when they successfully transplanted the heart of Denise Darvall (killed by a car in Woodstock) into the chest of Mr. Washkansky.

Dec 3, 1967 - The first human heart transplant was successfully carried out in Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, by a team of 30 doctors and nurses led by Christiaan N Barnard, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, who gave a new heart to Louis Washkansky, a 53 year old grocer who was suffering grave heart failure.
