Monlam festival in Lhasa, marking the end of the New Year festivities and celebrating the assumption of the 5th Dalai Lama to the throne in the 17th century. Dressed in facsimiles of Mongolian military uniforms, these men are competing in a traditional archery contests. Their helmets are topped with peacock feathers and the robes they wear are silk with red silk applique design, the traditional 'shou' or good luck symbol.
