Cape Town. The Alhambra Theatre was South Africa's first 'atmospheric' theatre and was situated in Riebeeck Street, Cape Town. Designed by architect P. Rogers-Cooke in a Spanish/ Moorish style, the Alhambra opened its doors to the public in 1929 with 'The Singing Fool' starring Al Jolson. The seating capacity of the theatre was 1931. The Alhambra was closed in January 1972
