Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993) was born at Botshabelo, a Lutheran mission station near Middelburg, eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), South Africa. While still a young boy, he modelled clay from a river-bed near his home. From these playful beginnings, Sekoto became both one of the most prolific and best acclaimed Black painters in South African art history. He moved to Paris, France in September 1947 in self-imposed exile.
