It’s an area where 50% of the people age 25-32 are HIV positive. People have called this the epicenter of the AIDS pandemic. Add in high levels of alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, poverty and poor education, and you’ve got an environment that would make it difficult for anyone to thrive.

We’ll take our drive in a mini-bus taxi, since many of the roads in Sweetwaters are now paved, and that’s how many of us get around. Sweetwaters is the kind-of-rural, kind-of-urban community that iThemba Projects works in. We’re partnering with local preschool teachers, high school teachers, parents, grandparents and community leaders to bring better education and positive role models to young people in the community.
