The Aral Sea was a lake lying between Kazakhstan (Aktobe and Kyzylorda provinces) in the north and Karakalpakstan.  Formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world with an area of 68,000 square kilometres (26,300 sq mi), the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects.

Not necessarily abandoned: But, the disappearing of the Aral Sea has left behind a desert filled with shipwrecks. The Aral Sea is located in Uzbekistan & Kazakstan ( both countries were part of the Soviet Union).

Kaindy Lake, (Kaindy means “lots of spruce”) is a 400 metre long lake located in the Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan.The lake is famous for its submerged spruce trees that rise out of the lake bed.
