Writing at the beginning of the year in kindergarten is all about building confidence. The kids have to see themselves as writers - even when that just means drawing pictures or writing squiggles. It can feel like a slow start, but it's so important that as we develop these tiny writers, we take our time to build them up step by step. I start early in the year by introducing the structure and purpose of our writer's workshop. Kids learn what and why writers write with an emphasis on the fact…

Using writing folders saved my writing block. It's so frustrating (for me and the students) to be in the middle of a writing project, only to have a student say, "I can't find my paper." Writing folders have helped us all stay on track and organized! In late summer, as soon as Walmart and Target stock their Back-to-School aisle I look for their specials on pocket folders. I can usually find them priced at 10 for $1. That's when I put my writing folders together. They are a super handy way…

My students were having difficulty staying focused at writing center. I decided to make theses folders for them to grab from the writing center and take back to their seats. I love that they have the resources and tools they need without having to physically be at the writing center. It is also a visual reminder for other students to leave them alone while they write. I only make enough in my classroom for the number of students who will be at writing center. You could also make one for each…

This is part of the free editing set from First Grade Wow. For kindergarten, I use it to show what they can do (smiley face in the check box) and what their newest personal challenge is (I highlight the check box). They keep it in their writing folders. It helps differentiate learning and gives each student focus. There are many other useful pages in the packet, too. All free! Hello Everyone! I love helping first graders express themselves through writing. For me, the first semester of first grade is all about creating a safe environment for them to feel comfortable putting their thoughts down on paper. We work on all the different ways to incorporate written expression into our day. I just love when one of my little would rather write than do anything else! Well we are now all about making our great writing even better...That means editing. I don't know about…

Hi, friends! It's Gina here from Miss Peluso's Kindergarten. I hope you're all having an amazing start to 2015! I'm here today to share with you one of the big projects that I worked on over winter break. Since last year, I have been searching for some way to help my students become independent writers. Yes, they are in kindergarten, but I KNOW that they can do it… all of them! This year, I decided to take the plunge and design a writing office to take away the uncertainty that comes along…
