Workers demonstrating during the General Strike of 1926. The General Strike was called by the Trade Union Congress in support of the miners who were facing pit closures or reduced wages / longer hours. The strike lasted 10 days and was unsuccessful with the UK Government keeping essential services running with volunteers (mainly drawn from the middle class). The miners remained on strike, but eventually were forced back to work in order to support their families.
