The naughty-looking monkeys were caught in a series of hilarious pictures by a British photographer at the Jigokudani National Park in Honshu, Japan.

Japanese macaques are unusual among monkeys in preferring a cold habitat to a tropical or subtropical one. Like most Japanese, these “snow monkeys” like nothing more than soaking in a hot-spring bath in winter. Here we showcase Kobayashi Hideki’s photos of these endearing creatures.

A popular tourist draw for Nagano are the Japanese macaques that are drawn to the area - particularly during inclement weather - by the local hot springs

Taken at the Jigokudani Monkey Park, Nagano Prefecture. it is difficult not to attribute human emotions to photos of snow monkeys. Their behaviour and social skills were often human like - like this embrace between mum and baby. I spent the day walking around the park with my 70-200mm and 1.4 x extender and didn't feel the need to use a longer telephoto lens as the monkeys are not shy and would often be only a few metres away.
