Dr. Adam McCluskey PT, DPT on Instagram: "❌This small muscle could be causing your neck and shoulder pain! (Full Program @theptinitiative Bio Link) — There is a small muscle that connects the shoulder blade to the neck, and can be really problematic if it gets overactive and tight. — It’s called the Levator Scapulae and it is a common source of neck pain and shoulder blade movement problems. — This muscle helps you elevate your shoulder blade, and bend your neck to the side, but can limit your ability to lift your arm overhead optimally if it’s restricted. — To begin fixing this issue I recommend doing this active Levator Scapulae release technique with a lacrosse ball to decrease the tonicity and tightness of this muscle. — Then we need to actively reinforce this new position by training Neck Muscles, Pulled Muscle In Neck And Shoulder, Muscle Knots In Shoulder Blades, Scapula Movement, Pulled Muscle In Shoulder Blade, Shoulder Blade Muscles, Muscles Of The Neck, Neck And Shoulder Muscles, Shoulder Impingement

Kristen Bos | Doctor of Physical Therapy on Instagram: "Stubborn muscle tension on the inside tip of your shoulder blade?? ❌ 🔥

If this sounds like you, you could be experiencing an overuse of a muscle called your levator scapulae.

This muscle often becomes overworked and strained when we tend to elevate the shoulder and roll it forward.

To give this muscle a break we want to activate the muscle that does the opposite movement to offload the tension you are feeling.

As a physical therapist, I often see this is due to a weakness in the lower trapezius. The lower trapezius helps to ground the shoulder blade down and back and is great for decreasing tension in the mid back and neck.

Great post by @drjoedamiani for more! 🙏 You’ve tried stretching it, massaging it and fixing your posture but it keeps coming back? Plus you get headaches and it seems like it’s all connected? (Well you’re probably right!) You see when we have improper shoulder blade function, the muscles that connect it to the spine have to overwork and those muscles tug on the neck which can cause headaches! PLUS, if your upper back and rib head joint are stiff… then the muscles (rhomboids, levant scapulae and upper trapezius have to work even more). SO to fix the situation we have to: 1.) Release the muscles to put them in a more healthy state. 2.) Let’s talk about the shoulder blades. Recently, while evaluating my newest batch of teacher trainees during their teaching-intensive, I was surprised to hear the instructions to “move the shoulder blades toward the pelvis” when the arms were in the overhead position, such as in Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute Pose). I heard it in Virabhadrasana I … Continued

the four stages of shoulder movements

In the wider yoga community, there tends to be a preference for drawing the shoulder blades down in almost every asana and often a belief that this is ‘right’ and that allowing the shoulder blades to lift towards the ears is ‘wrong’.
