Robert May - Creator of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Born in NY in 1905 to a Jewish family, graduated from Dartmouth 1926, hired as a copy writer at R.H. Macy’s & Co. Department Store. In 1933, hired @ Gimbell Brothers Dept Store as advertising manager & copy writer. Hired in 1936 as in-house advertising copywriter @ Montgomery Ward in Chicago. In 1939, May’s boss wanted him to write a cheery children’s book to hand out to Christmas shoppers. Hence how Rudolph came to be.
