The superior cluneal nerve (SCN) may be responsible for pain referred to the lower back. This pain is distinguished by its topography, by hypersensitivity of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, and by tenderness at a point on the iliac crest approximately 7 cm from the midline. The syndrome is usually treated with local anesthetic/steroid injections; if the pain returns, neuroablation may be performed.
