The Midnight Special began as a TV special on Aug. 19, 1972, then began its run as a series on Feb. 2, 1973. It aired through 1981. The 90-minute program, with Wolfman Jack as the announcer, aired Friday nights after The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on NBC.

The 40-minute LP and cassette, called "1971: The Road Starts Hear," was culled from a two-track tape done on a vintage Wollensak reel-to-reel deck owned by guitarist Joe Perry in 1971 at Boston University.
