The Lotus Flower Tiara, sometimes called the Papyrus Leaf Tiara, was initially a necklace gifted from the Duke of York (the future King George VI) to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (known later as the Queen Mother) on their wedding day in 1923. Just months after their marriage, she asked for it to be dismantled and turned into a tiara. The tiara was originally a necklace purchased at Garrard by King George VI in 1923 as a wedding present for The Queen Mother. It was a Greek key style necklace set with diamonds and pearls (photo 3). Six months after the wedding in October 1923, the necklace was dismantled and the stones used to create the tiara we see today. The tiara is Egyptian inspired with lotus flower motifs. The Queen Mother wore the tiara in the 1920’s bandeau style across her forehead but it doesn’t seem to be a favorite piece of hers. In 1937 she lent the tiara to her sister Lady Mary Elphinstone for the Coronation . In 1959 she loaned the tiara to Princess Margaret.
