The legend of 'Typhoid Mary' is a dark part of New York City's history. Mary Mallon was the first 'healthy carrier' of typhoid fever in the United States. Thought to be responsible for infecting 51 people of whom three died, she was forced to live in isolation on an island in New York's East River. More than a century later, pictures have emerged showing how the abandoned island looks today.
