a woman standing in front of a drawing

If you know me...then you know I do my field day duties a little different than the rest of the school. After years of face painting, snow cone-ing and watching kids grow bored of sidewalk chalkin' after five mintues, I decided a couple of things: 1. It's too dang hot outside on field day! 2. It's the PERFECT way to do a collaborative because you see all the kids in the whole school all in one day! You can read all about the field day activies that I love to do in this post. My fave: BACK TO…

So, here you go: my 20 Favorite Collabortive Projects. Be sure and click on the links, many of these have how-to…

there are so many students represented in this art project that they will be able to do

This project is perhaps the perfect “All About Me” activity. Not only do the kids have to write about themselves, but then all the individual works are combined to make up the “connected” class community. In this way, it connects the individual with the group. It uses my specifically designed tessellation pieces, and it has a ton of “wow factor” when complete. It’s fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher. I’ve done everything I can do to make this a successful project.

a blue bench sitting in front of a wall with pictures hanging on it's side

Each year, our sixth graders create a Legacy Project to leave behind for our school. The first year I introduced this, we worked pretty small, framed it without much pomp and circumstance, and hung it quietly in the hallway. It's beautiful, but I underestimated how powerful a project could be if over fifty students worked on it at one time. We used Kandinsky's painting as our inspiration and now this piece rotates between the hallway and the Art Room (depending on the empty spots in our…

a group of children standing in front of a wall with hot air balloons on it

I am so excited to share with you my first ever TIME-LAPSE VIDEO of my Annual Collaborative Mural Painting! This year the theme was " Hot Air Balloon Magic". I looked at many images for inspiration. Most ideas came from three main artists; Joey Chou, a current Disney Illustrator, Mary Blair, a Disney Illustrator from the 50's, and Ton Schulten, my favorite abstract landscape painter. ENJOY!!! I have done this for about 10 years now. I used to have students paint a flower garden. They could…
