This is one of those little tricks that makes a huge difference to how fast and efficiently you can knit. Once you get the hang of it simple cables will barely interrupt your flow. For cables that involve multiple crossings at once or large numbers of stitches you’ll probably want the security of using a cable needle.

My favorite cable needle by far is NO needle. It so much harder to cross the wrong way, because you rearrange the stitches first (make the cross) and then you knit them.

Remember the old cable saying:

“Left it out FRONT, be right BACK”

For a left cross the cable needle would be held in front, for a right cross the cable needle will be held in back.

So . . . when you work without a cable needle, your knitting needle will skip over the first stitches that would normally be held on the cable needle.

If the cable needle would go to the back, your knitting needle comes to the front to push the other stitches off to the back. Not only can it act as a cable needle (want to see a reel?) and a stitch saver, I very often use one to keep yarn strands in order when I need to rip down a column of stitches and fix a mistake. It’s especially handy when fixing fabrics with yarn-overs or cables where strands can easily become crossed and out of row order, but honestly, I’ve come to appreciate it on any fix because I don’t need to worry about catching the wrong strand. I hope you’ll give it a try and let me know what you think! I love to hear from you 🧶🌟♥️
