Breakfast Inspiration - BIRCHER

Breakfast Inspiration - BIRCHER -

Sometimes we all need a little inspiration. I find we slip into a routine very quickly especially when it’s just Butch and I. Every meal is just a repetition of the day before as we’re both busy and meals at home just serve their nutritional purpose. Keeping us sustained and hopefully healthy. It was on a recent weekend away that a friend introduced us to BIRCHER. I must confess I had not heard about it as breakfast, as a rule, is not my favourite meal and one I’d rather avoid...

Roadtripping From Our Southern Shores to The Mighty Zambezi -

On a fine Friday afternoon we were all packed and really excited to set off on our 5 day road trip from the southern tip of South Africa to the most northern border of Zimbabwe where our journey would end on the banks of the mighty Zambezi. Our first stop would be Matjiesfontein. We arrived at the Lord Milner Hotel shortly before sunset and settled ourselves with a sundowner in the atmospheric bar, nicely cozy with a roaring fire in the grate. We were entertained by the honkey tonk tunes…

Churning A-Whey Homemade Butter -

I am so excited. I made my own butter! It was simple to make and I can’t imagine why everyone doesn’t do it too. Since most people are Banting or following Tim Noakes and his full dairy revolution cream and butter have become quite expensive. A liter of cream still costs much less than 500g of butter. On a long road trip into the bundus, like we’re planning on doing, food supplies will be limited and we thought we’d probably find plenty of rich, creamy milk in most villag...

Rainy Days And Sundays

Rainy Days And Sundays - Butternut Relish -

Inclement weather is expected to dry up in October. The rain running rivulets down the window panes as I type is a surprise. Shouldn’t be, you’d think, but, we’ve had such good weather for eight straight weeks, that I was ready to rip out the old bather to wallow in the shallows with my recuperating brother Mark, who believes the ocean is healing and restorative. After watching My Octopus Teacher on Netflix, I must confess I have a new understanding of the kelp forests and ...

2nd November A Day To Remember

2nd November A Day To Remember -

It would’ve been my Grandmama, Joe Knight’s birthday. Born on the 2nd November, 1906. She would’ve been a ripe old age (113), but, would she have been proud of our rugby team? Absolutely. Oftentimes I wish she could’ve witnessed and experienced our Rainbow nation in action, especially when all the cogs are working in unison! South African rugby runs deep and passionately in our veins as my great-grandfather Percival Ross Frames was the very first president of the...

Safari On Super Suppers And Snacks -

Gosh it’s been a long time since I’ve felt that spring in my step. A new shop opened in town, Nibbly Bits. As the name suggests they stock all sorts of delicious nibbly bits. I went all out and got us some treats. After my spree I met up with friends en-route to Prince Albert in the Karoo and we all succumbed to the delicious, Almond Croissant, flaky, crisp, light and smothered in golden almonds at our local dog friendly deli Daly Bread a small intimate bakery in Q Square. As I w...
